gir,
I have the honour to inform you that about two
months ago Mr. J. H. M. Robson, the agent of Towkay Loke Yew,
C.M.C., when passing through Hongkong informed me that Loke Yew desired to lend the University of Hongkong a sum of $500,000
without interest for a period of twenty-one years.
2.
On his return to Kuala Lumpur Mr. Robson saw
Loke Yew to hom he expressed the grateful thanks of the
University and a telegram was received on the 29th May from
Loke Yew to the effect that the money would be paid at the end
of June. The Vice-Chancellor, Sir Charles Eliot, announced this
splendid benefaction on the occasion of conferring degrees on
the 1st June, but as the letter containing the actual terms on
which the money is to be lent has not yet arrived, though it is
daily expected, he merely stated that the loan was for a term
of years.
3.
I will report later on the manner in which it is
proposed to administer the benefaction, but I am taking the
earliest opportunity of acquainting you with this further
instance of Loke Yew's generosity towards the University of Hong
Kong, which he fully realises is doing a great work for his
native province of Kwangtung.
RIGHT HONOURABLE
ANDREW BONAR LAW, M.P.,
